Almost numbers

4/4- Turners Falls MA    Ok here we go with some numbers from this trip. These are preliminary numbers but they should be close.     We were out approximately 90 days and we spent a little over 2 weeks in Chico CA with A’s family. The next longest time we spent was 2 nights at several locations. This is just kind of the way we travel as we try not to travel weekends. Of the 90 days we had less than a handful where the furnace didn’t come on at some point in the night. I think there were only 3 or 4 nights that we could sleep with the windows open. It wasn’t so much that we were cold all the time but night time temps even in the desert usually dropped into the 50’s. We got snowed on quite heavily as we were leaving Chico but it turned to rain after a couple of hours. We did have a couple of tornado watches but nothing happened. We had mostly fine weather until we got back east with only a few nights of rain.     Ok here we go: diesel fuel we ...

4/3- Turners Falls MA   It was cold rainy and foggy when we departed this morning. We hopped right onto the highway took off on these all to familiar routes. We have traveled this way many times before so it wasn’t too exciting.     We are camped here at my mom’s house for a couple of days so there is not much to report on. I will try to put some numbers together tomorrow.  Thanks to all my faithful readers and I wish you all a happy Easter and a great spring.

Cold

4/2- Jam Room Brewing Company, Greenwood PA   Who turned off the heat?? Yesterday it was in the 80’s and today will hardly make 50 degrees. We woke up to the thud of rain drops hitting the roof. Of course it could be the acorns also. The radar showed no rain but when I stepped outside I was immediately covered with water. Last night we slept with the windows open for the first time in a month — until morning.     We headed over to the visitor center at Gettysburg which was nice but to tell the truth we were pretty much over the. Civil War by now. It was cold and misting so that negated much chance of a walk. I guess it was time to hit the road.     From this point on we will be driving mostly if not exclusively on interstates. We managed to make it through Harrisburg without much trouble and then turned north once again where we ran into some heavy fog. Route 81 in Pennsylvania should win the prize this trip for the most trash on the side of the ...

Fool

4/1- Gettysburg Campground, Gettysburg PA    We came down out of the mountains and headed for Maryland. Who would have thought that Maryland had actual mountains. We cruised down long downhill runs only to be faced with an equally long uphill slog. We crossed the Eastern continental divide- again. We must have crossed that 3 or 4 times already but I’m hoping this will be the last for a while.      The hills gradually leveled out and we drove through much more pasture with really green grass. Finally we got to Gettysburg and after driving across this town I’m ready to leave it. It’s a nice place with lots of old closely packed buildings. I have always liked the small alleyways between the buildings usually leading to some backyard. The traffic was insane though and this on a Wednesday in April. I wouldn’t want to be here in the summer.    It took us a while to figure it out but we finally got to tour the battlefield. It’s kind of impressive that t...

Flat

3/31- Chestnut Ridge Park, Bruceton Mills WV    Remember how I was talking about abandoned towns the other day well West Virginia has its share also. In fact a couple of the towns we drove through today probably should be abandoned. Siri took us on another road that was a single lane. I was praying that we wouldn’t meet someone on one of the hair pin turns as there was no where to go. This road led us through some of the most dilapidated areas we’ve seen. Houses falling down roofs collapsed and trash filled yards made this an experience to be missed.      I have to say once on the interstate things improved. The road itself was a marvel twisting and turning with long uphill climbs followed by the rush of 7 miles downhill. The amount of dynamite they used to make this road must have been impressive. The terrain is all hills as I don’t think there is a flat spot in the whole state. The road winds around one hill then climbs over another only to plunge down t...

Over the hill

3/30- Summer Wind RV Park, Dawson WV    I was reading on Facebook today about ghost towns in Virginia. It said there are 19 towns that have been abandoned in the state and it went on to list them. The other day I commented on a town we went through that didn’t have a single business on its Main Street. Well guess what that was one of the towns listed as abandoned. Of course this all depends on how willing you are to believe anything on Facebook.     It started raining on us almost immediately this morning so Ms Allspice got a well deserved bath. We crossed up and over several mountain passes on narrow winding roads even before crossing into West Virginia. So far WV has been nothing but up and down these long hills. The rain kept up most of the day until we pulled into our campsite which we got to fairly early in the day.     The campground is just off the highway so trucks are barreling by and will be all night. We struggled a bit to find a ...

North

3/29- Blue Ridge Barrel Brewery, Arrington VA    It was another chilly one this morning as we had to break the rv out of glacier that surrounded it. I exaggerate a bit but I was glad I was not in a tent like the folks behind us.      We quickly passed into Virginia and the road rolled up and down the hills. We passed a lot of pasture and hay fields. Some of the grass was already knee high. We passed through a bunch of small towns and almost without fail the downtowns were all but deserted. In fact one town I didn’t see a single open business on the whole strip. This is actually pretty common all across the country that most town centers have moved out of town.     As we had a relatively short way to go today we were looking for something interesting to stop at. Sure enough we found it at Appomattox. This is where RE Lee surrendered to US Grant to end the Civil War. It’s interesting that it was so well recorded that they know right where ever...
