Traveling
11/29- Wilkes-Barre PA
We hung around my mom’s house doing a few chores for her before heading out. We motored down 91 until the Mass Pike. It has been many years since I have driven on this road and it has some very interesting scenery. I have not explored this part of state and I probably should.
It was a bright sunny day as we cruised down the Northway until about Kingston where we peeled off on some back roads. This area is really rich in history from the beginning of our country. We saw dozens of old limestone houses. Some large and others bordering on cute. And there were all kinds of stone walls snaking through the woods. There were meticulously cared for walls and abandoned ones that just shot off into the woods.
We had gone through the Berkshires then the Catskills and finally the Poconos. Old fashion little cabins sprinkled the landscape. Most were run down and abandoned, their time in the spotlight gone. But there were some that had been made into small houses.
We finally pulled into a Cracker Barrel here in Wilkes-Barre and parked in their parking lot. Cracker Barrel lets you stay for free in any of their locations. It probably won’t be a quiet night but it is free. The Walmart lot was full mostly because this is Black Friday. Not being much of a consumer we didn’t buy anything.
The temperature is supposed to dip down into the low 20’s tonight so we have our furnace on and are pretty comfortable now. We did have to drive through several snow squalls this afternoon but they didn’t last long. I called ahead to a campground in Virginia and asked the temps. They said 40’s for highs and 20’s for lows. How far south do I have to go??
