1/1- Fort Bragg CA
It was raining when we arose and it didn’t care much to stop for most of the day. We were backtracking a bit as we decided to head south. The weather forecast promised less rain in that direction. So back through some more redwood forests. Here’s the first B , Bigfoot. This is Bigfoot country and I’m pretty sure we saw him sneaking around the campsite last night. We for sure saw him at this tourist trap that was buried in one of the redwood groves.
The second B is for bridges. Man are there a ton of bridges on this road as it meanders along side and over this river. There are simple bridges and curved bridges and some mighty high bridges. They sure had plenty of practice building these things.
When we got to the town, and I use this term loosely, of Leggat we turned off onto highway one. This is the Pacific Coast highway. This is the definition of twisty windy and any other adjective you can find. For about 20 miles we could barely do 30 mph. There were right angle turns and u turns and I swear we circled around and came back to where we started turns. The really funny part about this is the speed limit is 55 mph. I was lucky to do 15 on some of these turns.
We finally popped out onto the coast and once again saw the Pacific Ocean. The twisting and turning only let up slightly here. In some places there was no shoulder on the road and from the pavement it dropped a couple of hundred feet into the ocean. I think California is trying to save on guard rails or maybe they are looking for the Hollywood-ish car crash.
We finally got to our third B- Fort Bragg. There is no fort here. The only time there was a fort here was in the Civil War. This town is perched on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Our campsite is only about 30 feet from the edge of the cliff. Of course it is foggy and raining still so there’s not much of view. But I can hear the waves crashing below and I can hear the bellow of the horn on the buoy at the entrance to the harbor. We may hang here a day to see what it looks like when it’s not raining.
