3/20- Elkin NC
We have been turning our 3 hour drives into 5 and 6 hour trips. We are kind of get up in the morning and go kind of people so it is hard for us to just hang around the campsite waiting to leave. The reason we have to wait is that some rv parks have check in times that are in the afternoon and they are adamant that you not be there before. State and national parks are not a problem as you can always just park and enjoy the trails while you wait. We have been able to find random stops along the way and take up some time.
Today we stopped at the visitor center for the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is actually run by the National Park Service and they say this is the most visited park in the country. So far every park we’ve stopped at has told us this. We had wanted to drive on the parkway but a great majority of it is closed due to damage from hurricane Helene last year. There are sections open but they are not usually contiguous.
We did get to drive a couple of miles on it to the Folk and Art Crafts center. This is an amazing place! There is a quilt show going on now which is fantastic as well as a permanent collection which was huge. The gift shop held my interest as there was all kinds of interesting pottery and wood working. They had a ton of fiber arts also. We spent quite a bit of time there and were able to delay our arrival to well past the allotted check in time.
We are anchored at Byrd campground in Elkin NC. This is a nice quiet out of the way campground. We did take a nice walk to a very pretty waterfall after dinner.
As we are getting anxious to get home we are going to start doing longer days both in time and distance. The weather is also getting cooler though so far it hasn’t been freezing.
