3/9- Covington LA, Land-o-Pines campground
Well so far Louisiana has not offered a great deal of scenery. Yesterday it was miles of pine barrens and today it was miles of run down homes and junk yards. It was not pretty.
We were looking for a place to take a walk when we saw a sign for a wildlife management area. We decided to take a chance and drove 2+ miles down this gravel road to find a nature trail. Well we walked about a half mile into these thick woods which were surrounded by swamps before we exited stage right. There were a cacophony of bird sounds but the idea of snakes and alligators lurking made us less excited to continue.
We drove across this bridge which had to have been 8 or 9 miles long over land. Well I suppose it was mostly land most of the time.
We cut down to I-12 and crossed the mighty Mississippi River at Baton Rouge. Interestingly the scenery from the interstate was slightly more pleasant than this mornings view.
We had passed through a bunch of really small towns this morning and one thing we noticed which we have noticed all across the country is Dollar General. I swear you cannot drive 20 miles without seeing a Dollar General. We have even seen one entering a town and another while leaving.
We arrived at another of our string of funky campgrounds. This one Land-o-Pines. Most of these campgrounds are half or more filled with permanent residents. This is true for this one also only here they have built large structures over their rv’s. Some have huge patios and decks and even garages. They just usually throw us out back somewhere as we will be gone before they know we were here.
