Battlefield
1/9- Lee State Natural Area, Bishopville SC
We left relatively early and were driving down some back road that Siri thought was a good idea when we came upon a National Park. This is Moores Creek National Battlefield. Now I know you’re all thinking civil war but this is a Revolutionary War battlefield. I had never heard of this battle but it turns out it was quite crucial in deciding the war. A small band of patriots as they were called back then defeated a much larger British force.
The numbers of people involved in this battle was quite small. In the end only 30 or so people died but it showed the colonists that they could hold their own against the British. I am amazed at how the actions of only a couple of people could have such a great effect on the course of history.
The park itself is very beautiful and they do a great job showing the lead up and the actual battle ground. The earthen works are still there and you can actually walk up the road that the British charged on. It was a very interesting stop.
Most of the rest of today went through some pretty boring scenery. Again not much else but swamps and pine forests along the road. I have wondered if they let the engineers who designed these road have a French curve. The roads go straight for 10-20 miles then a couple of turns and then back to straight as an arrow.
We did go by Pedro’s South of the Border which looked to be pretty deserted. We did however stop at Buc-ee’s. The size of the place blew my mind and the huge parking lot was filled and the store mobbed. This like a convenience store on super steroids. Not so amazingly there was nothing on this whole gigantic store that we wanted to buy. It was an experience though.
The campground tonight is a state park that has equestrian camping. That’s right there are little corrals at each of the campsites so you could bring your horse along. You are by all accounts still required to clean up after your horse. We didn’t have a horse to paddock so we only had to clean up after ourselves.
Another scorcher of a day with the temps near 80. It’s all supposed to come crashing down in the next couple of days as temps will get into the 20’s by Monday. We are soaking it up while we can.
