Crowds

2/28- Verde River RV Park, Camp Verde AZ

We had a plan today that quickly went awry. We planned to head over to Sedona to try to experience one of the vortex’s that are reputed to be in this area. Well so did half the country as we tried 3 or 4 different parking areas of which none had any spots available. So we just motored down the road until we passed by and then turned around and drove back out.

It wasn’t a bad experience as the views were impressive. The red rocks and the towering mesa’s were gorgeous. There are supposed to be 4 vortexes in the area which carry high spiritual energy. We got near the Bell Rock one and about the only thing I felt was a strong desire to get the hell out of there. By the time we were heading out there was a constant stream of traffic heading in. This was way too many people.

So on to the next part of the plan which was to visit Montezuma Castle. Here again we had to drive through the parking lot three times before we could get a spot. This place was neither Montezuma’s nor a castle. It was a large cliff dwelling built into the cliff side. It has been years since you could actually climb into the dwelling so it was just a short walkway. It was impressive nonetheless to see this structure which has lasted some 700 years. The park service has tried to build a similar structure but it only lasted 10 years.

On the way out of the parking lot there was a big gathering of Indians. I assume they were probably Navajo because there is a huge reservation nearby. So we stopped and wandered through the craft fair. I’ll bet 75% of the booths there were selling jewelry. But the event was a celebration of Navajo customs. There were all kinds of Indian dancers and people in costumes. We stayed to watch several of the performances.

We finally got to the campsite which is a huge rv park. I think there are close to 700 sites but they did have a pool and a hot tub which we quickly took advantage of. They even have a sauna in the rest rooms and a mini golf course.

Tomorrow we hope to head north to try to find some relief from the crowds.
