Quartzite
2/26- Point Of Rocks RV park, Prescott Valley AZ
See I snuck a Q in there
The temp was rising even as we ate breakfast so we decided to hightail it out of there. We quickly got out of California and now I can afford to buy some fuel. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to push the van over the line into Arizona where diesel is almost $2 cheaper.
We ended up pulling into Quartzite to get fuel and also because we wanted to check this area out. This is RV central. The area is surrounded by BLM land and these ares are filled with campers. Because you can stay for free it attracts an interesting crowd. A big rally for Winnebagos was held here in January and apparently there were several hundred attendees.
As we left the interstate and headed north we steadily rose in elevation. The land around Quartzite was pretty barren and as we went north it continued. We were seeing saguaros now up the sides of the hills. This road went in almost a straight line for some fifty miles and along side we saw rv park after rv park. It seemed anyone who had some spare land would open an rv park and it would instantly be filled. I guess there are plenty of snowbirds looking for places to park their vehicles.
Finally we turned and up we went. This road was reminiscent of the Pacific Coast highway as it twisted and dipped and turned back on itself. There were signs warning semis not to come on this road and I know why now. We gyrated and flexed and finally pulled into Prescott.
The campground is built on a large pike of rocks. It reminds me very much of Joshua Tree in that there are all these rounded over boulders and rocks. We climbed down a trail and found a nice lake sitting amongst this rock pile. We are now at 4500 feet after traveling over 7000 feet this afternoon.
Still trying to figure out tomorrow’s plan. Hopefully something will become clear by morning.
