Soaking
2/22- Agua Caliente County Park, Anza Borrego, Julian CA
Siri got off to a great start this morning though we didn’t trust her enough to let her do the job. Her directions didn’t make sense at first and we reset her several times. We finally succumbed to her pleas and used the route she picked. We would have turned and taken Rt 10, a big highway but she had us go on this back road. This road wound for 20 miles down this long canyon.
It was a spectacular ride twisting and turning and having new incredible rock formations popping up around every corner. Apparently this is all public land as we saw lots of folks camped out along the way. As nice as it be to camp there I would never do it in the rain as that is all in a wash.
Anyway we turned the last corner and there was the Salton Sea. This lake is 200 feet below sea level and is so briny that nothing lives in it. As we skirted the top of it we came upon the wonders of modern irrigation and grove upon grove of orange trees. There was much lettuce and raisins also. It was just odd to see the juxtaposition of green plants right next to brown desert. There were forests of palm trees as dates are grown here.
About half way down the sea we turned and headed for Anza Borrego. We wound up through the desert and mountains until we reached Borrego Springs. We got out and took a nice hike and the desert is blooming. There were fields of flowers everywhere you looked. There were even tiny little flowers on the surface of the sand. We hiked up a canyon until we got to the top and then we followed the ridge back down. It was warm hitting 80 by the time we got back to the rv.
Our campsite for the night held a reward for our trekking this afternoon. True to its name there is a hot spring here and they have three different pools each with a different temperature. We soaked in the mineral water until they kicked us out.
